An ultrasound scan involves transmitting high frequency sound waves through the uterus. These bounce off the baby and the returning echoes are translated by a computer into an image on a screen that reveals the baby's position and movements. Hard tissues such as bone reflect the biggest echoes and are white in the image, and soft tissues appear grey and speckled. Fluids (such as the amniotic fluid that the baby lies in) do not reflect any echoes so appear black. It is the contrast between these different shades of white, grey and black that allows your sonologist to interpret the images.
Most parents look forward to their scan because it gives them the first glimpse of their baby. The sonographer will give you an ultrasound report with a printout of your baby’s images. However, it is important to remember that the main purpose of the scan is not to provide the first photo for your baby album, or to find out your baby's sex, either. It is to check that your baby is growing and developing normally.

3D/4D SCAN
3-D scans are still pictures of the baby in three dimensions, like the photos you sometimes see in newspapers and magazines. 4-D scans (with time as the fourth dimension) are moving 3-D images of the baby. If you decide to have a 4-D scan, you may be given a recording of it on DVD.
Occasionally they can be useful in giving additional information about a known abnormality. Because these scans can show more detail from different angles, they can help in the diagnosis of problems like cleft lip. This can help doctors plan the repair after birth. 3-D scanning can also be useful to look at the heart and other internal organs
